Highlights

Orvieto, Umbria

A Soak in Saturnia

For centuries people have visited these mineral hot springs for their famed health and healing benefits. The Etruscans came here. As did the Romans. And medieval travelers on the way to Rome. Feel the same relaxing yet energizing rush of Saturnia’s 100°F waters. Super cool pair of Italian flip-flops provided.

Olive Harvest Day

Tasting fresh pressed olive oil can completely change your understanding and appreciation for what it is. It’s spicy, earthy, and full of health benefits. To fully appreciate this essential part of the Mediterranean diet, we’ll glove-up and join a harvest crew in an orchard, pick a few trees, gather them in nets, and haul them to the mill for pressing, tasting, and celebrating olio nuovo, Umbria’s green gold. A tree-to-table experience.

Orvieto

The Well of St. Patrick is a Renaissance era, double helix well shaft, a marvel of science and engineering, and profound experience to visit. We’ll continue with a tour of the incredible Cathedral and its San Brizio Chapel frescoes.

Ancient Rome
Walking Tour

Rome

The Ancient Roman Forum, the Capitoline Museums, the Borghese Gallery, and the Roman Pantheon are the grand finale of our journey. These visits, with the help of our Roman local guide, will cap our BodyMind workshop with inspiration, awe, and wonder—and lasting memories of the work done on BodyMind Italy.

Itinerary

Civita di Bagnoregio

This tour begins in Rome, travels to Umbria for six nights at a country villa and ends with three nights back in Rome. Days typically begin with group sessions and visits to places of powerful healing potential and inspiration, with individual sessions later in the day.

Day 1—Meet in Rome, drive to Orvieto. Our driver will pick us up at our meeting point in Rome and whisk us out to Hadrian’s Villa for a morning of majestic ruins and ancient architecture inspired by the distant frontiers of the Roman Empire. We’ll celebrate with a midday feast in Tivoli, then wander through the Renaissance gardens of Villa d’Este. Orvieto is a short drive north where our countryside villa awaits nearby with a light tasting dinner on the terrace of our charming accommodations for the week.

Day 2—Orvieto. After a morning BodyMind session on the villa lawn overlooking Orvieto, we’ll venture into town to explore its medieval streets and impressive sights. We’ll settle into the best restaurant in town for classic Umbrian plates and local wines, then walk it off on a locally guided tour of Orvieto’s Etruscan past, masterpieces of Renaissance art inside the cathedral, and meet artisans making beautiful things in small shops around town. A sunset aperitivo on the terrace awaits back at the villa.

Day 3—Civita di Bagnoregio. It’s fun to explore the villa’s estate with morning practice in a different spot each day. Lunch today is at a nearby winery where we visit an Etruscan cellar with bottles from the 1800s and sample some of the (more recent) vintages in the Enoteca. In the early evening we’ll head to nearby Civita di Bagnoregio, a tiny hilltown of breathtaking beauty and nearly 3,000 years of history. We’ll climb its steep footbridge, the only path, up into town and enjoy the setting sun lighting up the surround clay calanchi. You’ll be free for dinner on your own in Civita.

Day 4—Olive harvest. It’s olive season in the green hills of Umbria so today we’ll join a crew harvesting olives by helping to pick a few trees. Working together we’ll learn the process of from unrolling nets beneath the trees to the stages of pressing at the mill. The flavors of olio novello—fresh pressed extra virgin olive oil—will change your understanding of what olive oil is. At the end of the day we’ll celebrate the (very tasty) fruits of our labors with the team. A farm fresh group dinner awaits.

Day 5—Saturnia thermal springs. This morning we day trip into Southern Tuscany to visit the ancient sulphuric hot springs of Saturnia. The Etruscans came here for medicinal purposes, and so will we.

Day 6—Pilgrimage day. Building on the work we’ve done so far, we’ll take our personal journey on a pilgrimage to the volcanic lake of Bolsena. First we’ll shop for a picnic at the weekly Orvieto farmer’s market, then head towards the Via Francigena pilgrimage path and a picnic spot overlooking the lake. Thankfully it’s only a leisurely stroll through wooded shorelands and farm pastures to Bolsena, a tiny section of the longer thousand mile road to Rome.

Day 7—Travel to Rome. Today we are ready to move to the big city. We’ll say goodbye to the villa, and hello to Rome. We’ll get checked into our hotel for three nights, and before heading out for a walk linking the fountains of the Acqua Vergine that has carried water into the Eternal City since ancient times. A welcome to Rome group dinner awaits.

Day 8—Ancient Rome. After an early breakfast we head out to meet our Roman guide at the Forum and a walk through the ruins of the ancient capital. We’ll visit… the Colosseum? San Clemente? Baths of Caracalla?... before returning to the hotel for BodyMind work on the rooftop terrace.

Day 9—Rebirth. Our last day together is the grand finale. We’ve come along way, adapted to the Italian rhythm of life, and we’ve shifted perspectives. Like Rome itself. We’ll explore these themes in Roman art at the Capitoline Museum? Vatican? Pantheon? Before coming together for a last dinner party to celebrate our time together.

Day 10—Arrivederci. Our tour is over after breakfast…

FAQ

Will we pick olives?

What are the accommodations like on this tour?

This tour spends six nights in a countryside villa near Orvieto, and three nights in a 4-star hotel in Rome.

What’s the balance between group time and free time?

This tour leaves significant time free and unplanned, so our travelers can relax, recharge, or explore on their own. This is an essential aspect of our small-group tours: keep the group time fun, efficient, and rewarding, while preserving ample hours in the day for each traveler to customize their own experience. We are happy to advise and organize optional free time activities and excursions as desired.

How much walking will there be on this tour?

There will be a moderate amount of walking. This is not a particularly strenuous tour but we do several orientation and walking tours around towns, museums, farms, and vineyards. We will sometimes walk over uneven paving stones, trails and dirt paths. Expect plenty of steps and stairs. Be prepared to walk three to five miles per day, and more during your free time if so inclined. Healthy travel and exercise are important to our tours–and good for the appetite!

When should I plan to arrive in Rome for this tour?

As the tour starts at 9am on Day 1 in Rome, we recommend arriving the day before and booking your own accommodations (we will recommend convenient and comfortable hotels). Sometimes travelers plan to arrive even earlier to adjust to the time change, but this is personal preference.

What will we eat?

So many wonderful things! The food in Italy is always local, traditional, and based on what’s in season. Coming together at that table is a big part of Italian life and good wine is certainly a part of that. We’ll taste local cheeses, traditional meats and wild game, vegetables, beans, the famous unsalted bread, and local pasta dishes—all of course paired with excellent wines. Group meals are fixed menu feasts, though we are happy to accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies.

I'm a solo traveler, can I join the tour?

Yes! Solo travelers can book a private room for themselves by paying the single supplement (the tour base price assumes two travelers per room). There are a limited number of single supplements available on this tour. It may also be possible for solo travelers to share accommodations if mutually agreed upon. Just inquire by email if interested.

What is the “BORSA A MANO” discount?

For travel partners wanting to join the tour sharing a double room—but not wanting to participate in the BodyMind activities—we offer a $1000 per person ($2000 for a couple) discount. Use the code BORSA A MANO when booking.
